Word play, cryptics & visual checks
Language and vision puzzles that still live in this atlas — different skill from Nikoli topology.

Cryptic crossword dual structure
Each clue hides a definition plus wordplay (anagram, container, reversal, double definition, …) that agree on one answer. Surface stories are camouflage.
Anagram lookup idea
Engines often sort letters into a signature key and probe a dictionary map. Same idea whether you scramble on paper or in a helper.
Lateral thinking vs closed grids
CSP-style grids publish complete constraints. Lateral prompts reward reframing assumptions. Do not apply Sudoku uniqueness habits to an open riddle.
Cryptograms and frequency
Simple substitution ciphers yield to letter frequencies and repeated patterns (common singles, doubles, short words). Start with the obvious English peaks, not with a random key guess.
Spot-the-difference checking
Digital versions usually compare two rasters and score clicks inside difference regions. The skill is visual search; the engine only validates coordinates.
