Japanese pencil puzzles
Slitherlink (Loop the Loop), Nurikabe, Hashi (Hashiwokakero, Bridges), Masyu, Yajilin, Heyawake — Nikoli grids in the browser.
What are Japanese pencil puzzles, and where should an English speaker start?
They are Nikoli-style grid puzzles — Slitherlink, Nurikabe, Hashi, Masyu and related types — played in a browser. You do not need Japanese: open a How to play type page for the rule picture, then try Kwon-Tom Loop or puzz.link from the list below.
How Slitherlink and Nurikabe differ
Nikoli-style grids rarely ask you to add. Slitherlink (Loop the Loop) is a loop on the dots; Nurikabe is islands-and-sea shading. Hashi is Hashiwokakero / Bridges; Masyu is the pearl puzzle. You do not need Japanese — a rule page with a picture is enough.
Where to play Slitherlink online
Kwon-Tom Loop is the hardcore daily. puzz.link is free in the browser: open a grid, play Hashiwokakero too, share the link. Puzzle Picnic and Inaba are libraries. Many Nikoli-style boards play in the browser with no account.
When you stall
Read a rule page or a solver before you dump the answer. Connectivity types come back fast on Noqx. If you only want to check a step, use something that shows the path.
Order
English-friendly dailies and browser play sit first. Chinese-UI Puzzle Team banks are useful if you read Chinese; they sit later as extras.
