Futoshiki — rules and where to play
FUTOSHIKI · Hutosiki / Greater Than Sudoku / Unequal
Greater-than signs between cells tell you which is larger, while rows and columns still hold 1–N once each. The gentlest cousin Sudoku has.

Rules
- Each row and column contains 1–N exactly once, where N is the side length.
- A ">" sign between neighbours points at the smaller one.
- Given digits cannot change.
How to start
Start from the extreme chains
A cell larger than three others can only be 4 or 5 on a 5×5, which narrows it fast.
Inequality is transitive
A>B and B>C puts A on top; chain reasoning is very efficient.
Combine with row and column uniqueness
Once a cell's range is set, elimination usually settles it in one step.
Where players get stuck
- Reading the ">" sign backwards.
- Forgetting rows and columns still need 1–N exactly once.
