Rules

  1. Each cryptic clue splits into a definition half and a wordplay half that share one answer.
  2. Common devices: hidden words, reversals, anagrams, charades, double meanings, deletions, homophones.
  3. Solving either half usually yields the answer; the other half confirms it.

How to start

Find the definition half first

One short phrase is usually a plain definition — grab it for a candidate.

Learn the indicator words

"upset" hints reversal, "mixed" an anagram, "part of" a clipping. Indicators are the door.

Verify with the crossing

Every cryptic square has two clues behind it; write one direction and check the other.

Where players get stuck

  • Reading the whole clue as a plain definition — a cryptic must split in two.
  • Missing the indicator and spinning on the wrong device.
