Nurikabe — rules and where to play
NURIKABE · Islands in the Stream / Cell Structure

Rules
- Each numbered cell belongs to an island whose size equals the digit.
- Islands may touch only diagonally, never edge to edge.
- All black cells (the sea) must form one connected region.
- No 2×2 block of black cells is allowed.
How to start
Close off completed islands first
The moment an island hits its number, blacken all four of its sides. It is the most reliable opening move.
Use "the sea is connected" as a weapon
If blackening a cell would cut the sea in two, that cell is white. In the middle game this fires almost every step.
Run the 2×2 ban as a scanner
Any cell that would complete a 2×2 black square must be white. One sweep can settle a whole region.
Where players get stuck
- Forgetting the sea must stay connected, then ending with two seas staring at each other.
- Merging two equal digits that sit next to each other — only cells actually joined count as one island.
