Heyawake — rules and where to play
HEYAWAKE · Heya Wake / Room Division / Divided Rooms
Thick lines cut the grid into rooms, and numbered rooms need a set number of black cells. Three bans stacked together make this one of the hardest Japanese types.

Rules
- A numbered room holds exactly that many black cells.
- Black cells may not touch edge to edge.
- All white cells must be connected.
- Along any straight line, black cells may not be split into three or more groups — white cannot run unbroken through three or more rooms in one row or column.
How to start
Bite into 0 rooms and near-full rooms first
Zero whites the whole room; a digit near room capacity leaves very few arrangements.
Room borders are leverage
Black cells cannot be adjacent across a room line, so calls at the border are unusually firm.
Keep the straight-line rule as the finisher
It is the least intuitive rule and often the only way through.
Where players get stuck
- Missing the fourth straight-line rule, which leaves the puzzle with several valid answers.
- Treating room borders as ordinary lines that adjacency can cross.
